English

Our English curriculum is built upon a foundation of rich and varied texts that inspire curiosity, imagination, and a love of reading. High-quality stories, poems, and non-fiction texts are carefully chosen to expose children to diverse language, themes, and experiences, providing meaningful contexts for learning. Oracy is at the heart of our approach, with plentiful opportunities for structured talk, discussion, and storytelling enabling pupils to develop confidence and articulate their ideas clearly. Children rehearse language orally before translating it into written form, often supported by drama, role play, and performance to deepen understanding and engagement. Alongside this, there is a strong emphasis on securing the fundamentals of writing, including phonics, spelling, handwriting, grammar, and sentence construction. These essential skills are reinforced consistently across the curriculum, ensuring that children can apply them with increasing independence in a range of subjects and purposes.

Josh Seigal - Patron of Reading

At Fleetville Infant School we have our very own poet! Josh visits us every term to do Poetry Assemblies and lead workshops. The children love learning his funny poems off by heart and getting updates on Bluebell the cat!
